An introduction to Cyanotype

Service Description

Learn how to make a sun print, otherwise known as a cyanotype. This type of printing is a form of photography that does not require a camera or an expensive darkroom. A unique print is created through chemistry and the exposure to a UV source of light onto cotton based paper or other types of materials such as glass, wood, plastic or metal. This is a contact printing technique which means that the size of the photograph shown on the print is relevant to the size of the negative of the image. The negative could be digital or analogue. In this workshop we will be using analogue negatives*. You will need to bring along a developed film either in 35mm or 120mm format ( up to 6x6 ) and use a negative of your choice to print on an already coated and ready to expose glass dry plate. We will then be using this dry plate as our negative to produce the cyanotypes. You will learn from scratch the chemistry required for this technique, how to coat the surface you want to print on and how to correctly expose it under UV lighting. We will be using the sun in order to expose the cyanotypes unless the weather prevents us from doing so with a cloudy day. In that case we will be using a UV lamp. Schedule: 10am - 4pm Level of experience: This is a workshop for everyone although a basic knowledge of film photography would be advantageous. What you need to bring Bring your b/w exposed and developed film, 35mm or 120 format up to 6x6.
